The cycle trail KČT no. 143 begins at the Ráj crossroads. Be careful here, because the signpost promises to take you to Doksy, however in reality all is a little different and so this passage is here to put things right. Right at the beginning of the ascent of the old Romanov road turn left into a magical valley beneath Brusné. The red cycle trail of the Vrátenský circuit links on from the left at Příbohy and thus the trail is marked by red and yellow markers. Only when ascending are the signs enforced by the number 143. The route carries on along the road in this manner to Kružský důl. The route also begins with a sharp ascent because we are cycling beneath the highest hill of the area – Vrátenská Mountain. Two paths of the Vrátenský circuit lead to the peak of the mountain, one from the centre of Libovice, and the second from just behind the village. The short descent through the woods finishes with one of the first views on Bezděz. We gradually move into Nosálov, where there are a number of possibilities for refreshment after the previous difficulties of our uphill struggle. One shall find another cyclist crossroad opposite the well known pub “U Nás”. The 0008 trail to the right leads to Lobeč. We have already been down that road and so we shall keep to the main path and head on forward. The descent into Žďárský důl is long and fast. We shall say farewell to the Vrátenský circuit, which disappears in Kružský důl and a little further on we shall turn in the opposite direction onto a road ascending into Bezdědice, an old village of Czech nobility, destroyed around the year 1859 by fire – the church of St. Wenceslas which can be seen from afar is thus only of pseudo-Romanesque style, built in the years 1868-70.
You shall find a sign at the crossroads of this village which elucidates the goal of the 143 trail, this being Mladá Boleslav, 20 km away. The notice board also mentions that the following trail is not marked. You must stick to the road through Březovice into Katusice, where you link onto the main road from which you shall later turn off to Pětikozly, cycle through Rokytovec into the valley of the river Jizera. In Vínec you shall come across the 241 cycle trail which follows the river from its estuary into the Labe River in Káráný and carries on further to the North.
In Bezdědice the 0014 trail leads into the already promised Doksy. After two kilometers you shall get to the Pankrác gamekeeper’s lodge. Keep to the main road and you shall reach Bezděz in a while. Take the 0060 route to the right into Valdštejnsko, which is part of the Belský circuit to which belongs the 0061 tank path into the former Ralsko military zone. Our trail at Pankrác turns left and is parallel with the yellow tourist footpath, which runs through the woods and is from tarmac, making it a pleasant ride for cyclists as well. The beautiful downhill cycle through the pinewood forest full of sandstone cliffs ends at the Luka crossroads and turns right into Okna. The whole village is uniquely marked and avoids the main road and its heavy traffic. The trail only crosses this road once. Behind Okna you shall ramble along to the edge of Doksy along a paneled road - the original old road had been destroyed by ploughs. In the olden days nobody thought about cycle trails. All in all, there was no use for them, because it was almost a miracle to come across a decent bike. Only foldable bikes were available and heavy duty “Ukraines”.
You shall enter Doksy by an old road. Whoever should have any mechanical problems can visit the local cycle and repair shop. The main square has fortunately been turned into a pedestrian zone instead of a car park which has been the case of many other small towns. Here our trail ends. The return trail shall be found under the 0015 route. We traveled along this route earlier on in the opposite direction. Both trails can be combined with other small roads. One of them, a beautiful long forgotten tarmac road where you shall not meet a single car connects Okna with the crossroads beneath Tachov hill, an unhappy trachytic peak which, due to human diligence shall sooner or later disappear. A once proud mountain standing high above all others shall end up as a lake at best or as a rubbish dump at the worst. The other connection is the road running through Luka into Ždírec, but the greatest diversification is offered by the third variant, a road ascending through Žďár to Kruh. This is an area which lovers of rural architecture shall fall in love with. They shall find many timbered cottages and log cabins, some of them built into sandstone cliffs themselves. Kruh also can be proud of its Baroque church dating from the beginning of the 18th century and the ossuary has two tombstones of Berka and Hrzán inserted into its walls. The road carries on to Houska. One can cycle right up to the chateau and then choose from a multiplicity of choices. Either take a tarmac road which shall perfectly test your brakes all the way to Tubož, or you may choose other paths of the Vrátenský circuit. The blue route follows the chateau path into Tubož as well. The red route leading from Kružský důl carries on through Drnclík into Příbohy. At the crossroads of Vojetín you may also use the green route. This route leads across Vrátenská Mountain into Libovice. In a nutshell, this part of Kokořín is a cyclist paradise.
